Travel Photo Roulette Round 20 “Clothes”: And the Winner is…

Welcome to Travel Photo Roulette 20: Clothes

Congratulations to Andrew from The Unframed World, the winner of this round’s Travel Photo Roulette, “Clothes”!

On the day of shooting this photo, at one minute before midnight seven floats raced around Hakata in Fukuoka City carried by dozens of these nearly half-naked Japanese men. This is all part of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival. It’s sure an experience I won’t soon forget either.”

We received 23 pictures featuring clothes this week, and it was hard for us to choose the winner. In fact, it’s hard to even mention all of our favorites because there are so many of them. I’d initially thought I would prefer something traditional rather than modern, but Andrew from the Unframed World came up with this brilliant photo that shows how clothes are used in modern life to express ourselves and our traditions. This skimpy outfit suggests a free spirited attitude that contrasts with his businesslike demeanour. The blur of the bus juxtaposed against the costume reminds me of the persistence of Japan’s traditional culture in the modern world. And… is that a whip tucked in his bottoms?

Runner-up 1: Claire from Beached Eskimo

“I visited Patagonia a couple of winters ago, and spent a bit of time horseriding. In San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina, I went horseriding above the snowline. As we stopped for some morning tea and mate, I snapped this picture of one of the guides, a boy dressed in typical gaucho gear.”

I love this photo. It feels traditional and honest. The boy, the horse, and the snow in the background, blend together in harmony. At first glance, I thought I saw a pair of alpaca/llama’s legs, when I was actually looking at the boy’s fur pants. The fur saddle just completes the illusion.

Runner-up 2: Jaime from Breakaway Backpacker

“This is a shot of indigenous people in Santa Cruz la Laguna (Lake Atitilan) reenacting Mayan rituals. The dance lasted for ever. I absolutely love the texture and color of all the outfits.”

Ryan likes this one a lot. It’s clear that they paid a lot of attention in making these glorious and vibrant traditional dancing outfits. However it seemed like they totally forgot about the footwear, so the dancers ended up wearing regular sneakers!

Some special mentions also go to Christy from Ordinary Traveler for her photo  “A Sadhu in Nepal”: very mystical and vibrant, and Audrey from That Backpacker for her photo of little girls in a remote Bolivian village: it’s a very sweet photo.
