Sunsets from around the world, part 2

I love sunsets – who doesn’t? Sometimes I wonder whether my eyes are going to be blind someday because of my habit of watching sunsets. When I realize that, I try not looking at the sun directly to minimize the danger, however I can’t move my eyes entirely away, sunsets are too captivating. Here are 5 of our favorite sunset moments. I hope you enjoy them!

Sunset from the sky, above the clouds

Sunset from the sky above the clouds, during Bali Java flight, Indonesia

Sunsets and sunrise from the airplane could be really gorgeous. Maybe most of the passengers at that point choose to close their window because of the strong rays of the sun. But I wouldn’t waste such a view. Except if I happen to be asleep, which is usually the case.

Here’s a representative of sunset from the sky, above the clouds, taken during our short flight from Denpasar, Bali to Surabaya, Java, where I came from originally. The feast of colors was incredible.

Sunset over the Sydney Opera House, Australia

Sunset over Sydney Opera House, Australia

Sydney Royal Botanical Garden, right in downtown Sydney, is my favorite place in the city. It’s probably the most metropolitan place to see thousands of wild bats (named flying foxes) sleeping during the day and hundreds of wild yellow crested cockatoos flying around and screeching very loudly. While waiting for the bats to wake up and start flying to the sky, I love to watch the sun set behind the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge, two important icons of Sydney and Australia.

Sunset near Wellington, New Zealand

Sunset overlooking the South Island, from the North Island (New Zealand)

Not far from the New Zealand’s capital, Wellington, in the North Island, we could drive to this gorgeous cliff facing southwest. When the sky is clear, we could see the South Island in the horizon. Have a hike and picnic there, pray for a clear sky, and you will enjoy a gorgeous view like this during the sunset. Thanks to our dear friends who showed us this special place.

Silver sunset in Tanah Lot, Bali, Indonesia

Silver sunset in Tanah Lot, Bali, Indonesia

Chasing a beautiful sunset is not always easy. Or rather, is not usually easy. For the most dramatic view, you need to be able to see the horizon, and you want no or little cloud. When we were in Tanah Lot, Bali, famous for its ancient temple perched on a rock on the sea shore, the clouds were hanging limply from the sky. Not thick ones, just a few thin ones, but around the horizon. We prayed for them to be gone by the sunset, but they stayed. What surprised me was, the sunset still looked gorgeous with these clouds! The thin clouds still let through most of the rays, but scattered everywhere. It gives illusion you are in a world of silver and silhouette.

Sunset of Santorini, Greece

Sunset at Santorini, Greece

Santorini is world famous for its cascading towns, white washed houses, blue domed churches, fantastic beaches, and stunning sunsets. The picture above illustrates how gorgeous the sunset here. The strong sun, the golden-orange illuminated clouds, the smaller island’s silhouette, this was one of the most enchanting sunsets we’ve ever seen.
